We like the way FiveThirtyEight looks, but we’ve decided to hire an art director to make it look even better. The art director, reporting to the creative director, will help develop new designs for the site and will help ensure that illustrations, photographs and video fit the “look and feel” of FiveThirtyEight’s data journalism. The design of the site should reflect the personality of its staff and its articles and graphics: rigorous but lively.
This role requires broad knowledge and advanced skills in visual design, information architecture, user interface design, and web standards, as well as an ability to work within a team of designers, editors, and developers.
Candidates should be well-versed in and passionate about photography, illustration and typography, as well as data visualization. We’re particularly looking for someone with at least six years experience in editorial art direction, primarily on a website, who thinks creatively and works collaboratively. The job is based in our New York newsroom.
