FiveThirtyEight is looking for two fall interns, one for our visual journalism team and one to help with our podcast and video production. Both positions are paid, and we can accommodate part-time interns who are enrolled in school.
The visual journalism intern will help us design and edit charts for the site (like these ones), create original stories (which can be primarily or entirely visual) and — depending on skill set and level of interest — contribute to bigger interactive projects. The ideal candidate will have experience making data graphics using design tools such as Illustrator or programming languages such as JavaScript, Python and R. Other journalism-related programming experience — such as web-scraping or news app development — is definitely a plus. General comfort with numbers is essential, as is experience with spreadsheet software such as Excel.
The podcast and video intern will divide his or her time between audio and video production. FiveThirtyEight currently produces two weekly podcasts: Hot Takedown, our sports show, and What’s The Point, a more general conversation about data and life. Each show also has a video component. In addition, we produce other video content to accompany stories on the site. The intern will help with topic research, setting up the studio, editing both audio and video, and packaging online and for social media. We’re looking for someone with basic audio and video editing skills, but more than that, we’re interested in applicants who are curious and eager to take on new challenges. Both our shows are young, and we’re looking for someone to help develop them. Interest in the 2016 election is also a plus.
All our interns are encouraged to pitch stories, collaborate on bigger projects and participate in the daily editorial process.
Our internship program runs from approximately Sept. 14 to Nov. 20. Interns should be enrolled in a U.S. college or university and taking at least one class at the time of application. Candidates with graduation dates of May 2015, August 2015, December 2015 and May 2016 will be considered. More details about eligibility can be found on the application page.
Interns may work up to 40 hours per week (with some flexibility in schedule to accommodate classes as needed).
For more details, read the job descriptions linked above. Applicants must apply online. We will not look at applications emailed to us. The positions are filled on a rolling basis.
