An Advanced Stats Primer For The New NFL Season
FiveThirtyEight

Welcome to the latest episode of Hot Takedown, FiveThirtyEight’s sports podcast. Neil Paine and Kate Fagan are on vacation, so this week’s show (Aug. 23, 2016) is a compilation of two of our special Stat School editions that will help you prepare for the upcoming NFL season. First, Statman, aka Neil Paine, will explain QB passing stats, teaching us about win percentage, passer rating and expected points. Then, we move to the running side of the game. Statman explains the merits and drawbacks of using raw yardage, yards per carry and expected points added.

Also, don’t forget to look out for Baseline, Hot Takedown’s spin-off podcast about the U.S. Open, hosted by Carl Bialik. That should hit your feeds sometime early next week.
