What Went Down In Elections In Minnesota, Wisconsin, Vermont And Connecticut

Yeah, Meredith, Illinois has never had a female governor either! Yet women have run deep-red states like South Carolina, Oklahoma and Alabama. It just goes to show that being a reliably blue state doesn’t necessarily make it easier for women to get elected. But it’s also interesting that in that analysis, we found that there really isn’t a way to rank which states are better or worse for female candidates. Some states are more likely to have had female governors but less likely to have sent women to Congress; others have lots of women in their state legislatures but fewer women in higher state offices. Of course, there are some states where more women have held office but overall it’s hard to spot a coherent state-by-state pattern.
