The rehearsed lines just make me wish the moderation were stronger and actually elicited real responses. It’s terrible interviewing politicians because of this very kind of rehearsal.

To respond to the point Meredith raised about race and gender, I’m not entirely sure how this translates to this kind of setting, but there’s some evidence that women and minorities are punished for speaking up about diversity issues — people don’t always respond well to these issues being pointed out.
