To jump back to Micah’s question of which moment has stood out so far: I think what people will take away from the first half of the debate is demeanor, and it’s not entirely flattering for either side. Kaine seems excited to express every facet of his support for his ticket’s positions, but at points, as we’ve noted here, has cut off the moderator even when she is supporting him. In other words, he can come across as overeager and know-it-all. Pence comes across as calm and composed, but also seems forced into justifying or skirting around topics — like Trump on taxes — where he doesn’t seem comfortable.
