What Went Down During Marie Yovanovitch’s Testimony
Here’s a question that has to do with this hearing, how it will be digested by the public and what the electoral effects going forward might be: If white women are the new big segment of swing voters, does this play pretty well with them? A woman unfairly fired from her job? Just spit balling, but it seems like Yovanovich is pretty sympathetic as a narrator. Of course, the GOP line will be, you serve at the president’s pleasure.
For what it’s worth, so far this testimony has had very little to do with Trump pressuring Ukraine to investigate the Bidens.
On Wednesday we noted that the electorate tends not to be focused on foreign affairs. But making institutions political when they should not be political was part of what brought down Nixon, who used the FBI and the IRS to target political opponents. This isn’t exactly the same thing, but the narrative of making the State Dept. political and poisonous seems like a pretty straightforward and damaging one.
