What Went Down During Marie Yovanovitch’s Testimony
Yovanovitch is pointing out that her anti-corruption work made her some enemies in Ukraine. One Ukrainian official — former prosecutor Lutsenko — actually helped originate the false rumor that she was obstructing prosecutions in Ukraine.
To expand a bit on what Amelia said about immigrant witnesses, Yovanovitch’s testimony has also made reference to the importance of rule of law and a free society, playing into a couple of criticisms that are specific to the impeachment inquiry and also general objections that Trump’s opponents have raised since the 2016 campaign.
Perry brings up a good point about the non-traditional way that Trump approaches foreign policy. We hear his people talk a lot about how he thinks of it in business terms: Ukraine “owes” him something. NATO countries need to pay more. He seems to miss the value of some of these international coalitions, many formed as a way to counterbalance communism, promote the West, etc., back in the middle of the 20th century.
