The commentators I am seeing are talking about unity, but I am not sure that great feats of rhetoric exactly create unity on the spot. They challenge people’s existing assumptions, which can be part of the process of creating new coalitions. That’s not the same thing as speaking to the base, but speeches that don’t ruffle feathers aren’t really unifying. They’re just bland.
