The State of the Union is used to bring attention to the issues that the president wants Congress to prioritize. Keep in mind that Trump did everything he could to make the 2018 elections about immigration, and his party lost 40 House seats. He shut down the government over it and became less popular for doing so. I see no reason why tonight’s approach should work.
