Ninety percent of Democrats think “Medicare for All that want it,” or a system that allows Americans to choose between a national health insurance program or their own private health insurance, is a good idea, according to a recent NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll. However, only 64 percent of Democrats think Medicare for All is a good idea if they’re told that it would replace private health insurance.

As your Buttigieg correspondent for the night, I can’t tell if he was effectively navigating his way through traffic with that response or if seems like the third wheel. I do think, in the long run, that the public option is a pretty easy position to defend and that might be to the benefit of candidates like Buttigieg and Biden as these topics come up over and over again.
