What Went Down During President Trump’s Closing Speech At The RNC
I think this is a solid, incumbent president convention speech, Galen. I’m not sure it’s a solid I’m-losing-by-a-healthy-margin speech. That’s sorta why I keep coming backing to this question of whether Trump and Republicans should try to address the pandemic and economic fallout more directly and fully.
Galen, I definitely think Trump is starting to get into the moment, with the crowd chanting “four more years,” and we might see him make more asides as he feeds off the energy of the crowd. However, I can’t help but shake the SOTU aspect of this speech. That said, I remember looking back to the last night of the DNC, I thought it was a poor choice for Democrats to focus so little on policy. You can’t accuse Trump of not focusing on policy and what they have done in the last four years.
Galen yes, I struggle to imagine what the point of a widely different tack would be tonight. This is a run-of-the-mill incumbent stump speech: We did good, we’ll do even more good if you give us more time, and here’s why the other guy isn’t an option.
Except, of course, for the fact that this stump speech is being given on the White House lawn.
