Trump’s foreign policy always makes me think of Walter Russell Mead’s four categories of American foreign policymakers: Hamiltonians, Wilsonians, Jeffersonians and Jacksonians. Trump is a Jacksonian: someone who is mostly isolationist but will strike with fury if the American homeland is threatened. It’s not that different of a stance from the dovish, Jeffersonian views of many Democrats.

Grenell, during his period as Acting Director of National Intelligence, became the first openly gay Cabinet official, and he is only the third openly gay man to speak at the RNC. He’s had a lot of good things to say about Trump’s record on LGBTQ issues — even though the Republican Party still officially opposes gay marriage.
