One of the few polls with a large sample of Black voters came from Ipsos and the Washington Post back in early June. It found Biden ahead of Trump, 92 percent to 5 percent, among Black registered voters. And among all Black Americans in the poll, 9 percent approved of Trump’s job performance while 88 percent disapproved.

The Republican convention has effectively presented the party as more diverse than it is. It is reasonable to emphasize that Republican diversity appeals play well with wavering white voters. But because Democrats have such a high share of voters of color, the marginal swing voter of color is actually more conservative in identification and values than the marginal white voter.
