While many of this convention’s speakers seem to be direct responses to criticisms levied at the president, Eric Trump’s speech emphasizes Trump’s personal character as a fighter. My sense is that the party’s offense is about Trump’s character and their defense is about how the party is not racist.

“My father will fight for you,” Eric says multiple times in his speech. It’s not necessarily painting Trump as more empathetic, but it is, I think, an effective rhetorical device in portraying Trump as a fighter and strong leader.
