Yeah, Clare. Politico published leaked audio a few days ago from 2016 where Trump said that, “Many Blacks didn’t go out to vote for Hillary ‘cause they liked me. That was almost as good as getting the vote, you know, and it was great.” That same strategy seems to be on full display here in 2020.
Paul promoted Trump as an anti-war, more isolationist president who wants to invest at home. He mentioned Trump opposed the Iraq War, unlike Biden, but the full story is a bit more complicated. In a 2002 interview on Howard Stern’s show, Trump said he supported the Iraq War. But not long after that, he did start to express opposition.
Paul brought up national security, an issue that Republicans say they care about, a lot. According to a Morning Consult poll administered from July 31 to August 2, of all the issues polled, national security was “very important” to the largest share of Republicans (83 percent).
