What Went Down During The May 17 Primary Elections
The idea that more extreme candidates will have a harder time winning is certainly seems to be the wisdom the Democrats still subscribe to. They’ve been boosting Mastriano and highlighting his ties to Trump to Republican voters:
That said, I feel like personality can trump ideology (pun intended) in ways the Democrats and the old wisdom might not account for.
On the one hand, Nate, I hear you. But I thought The Cook Political Report’s Amy Walter made a convincing argument that we might be moving toward a reality where voters prefer more unorthodox candidates. We’re certainly seeing evidence of that in the primaries. I suppose … the real test will be the general in many instances!
Yeah, Holly, but I question how respondents define “political extremism.” I suspect it’s usually a concern about extremism … on the other side.
