Ryan’s campaign is an interesting one to talk about. He’s been running a general election campaign from the start, seemingly unconcerned about real competition in the Democratic primary. His pitch to voters could be summed up as “Trump’s populism, without the culture wars.” He has come out pretty aggressively against China, linking corporate offshoring to Ohio’s post-industrial economic slump. He’s also said that he wants to put more police on the streets as opposed to fewer, and that “masks suck.” He’s gotten some blowback from Democratic lawmakers for sure, but given how much Ohio has shifted during Trump’s time in office, it’s hard to see how a standard Democratic pitch would get him very far.
