Checking in on how Democratic women are doing so far tonight. As I wrote earlier, Democrats are nominating fewer women this cycle than last — women currently make up 42 percent of House nominees and 31 percent of Senate nominees, which marks a decline from 2020, when women made up 47 percent and 36 percent of House and Senate nominees, respectively, according to the Center for American Women in Politics. In tonight’s primaries, women won in some races that may see them elected in November, such as Val Demings in the Florida Senate race, Annette Taddeo in Florida’s 27th District and Laura Gillen in New York’s 4th District. And we’re still waiting to see what happens in New York’s 10th, where state Assembly member Yuh-Line Niou is in a close race. Incumbent Rep. Carolyn Maloney lost her primary largely on account of the redistricting scramble.
