Trump Endorsees I’m Watching Tonight
The vast majority of Trump endorsees on today’s ballots today are incumbents, and in Florida, the former president has endorsed U.S. House candidates in almost half of the state’s congressional districts. Here’s what to know about the two nonincumbents Trump endorsed across today’s races:
- Air Force veteran Anna Paulina Luna is running for Florida’s 13th District, and although she initially looked favored to win, Kevin Hayslett, a former Florida state attorney, has mounted a serious campaign against her with endorsers like former Trump cabinet official Michael Flynn and other high-profile local Republicans. Hayslett has quite literally given Luna a run for her money, too — the race has been among the most costly primaries in Florida this year. For Luna, though, tonight is a possible chance at redemption: After winning this primary two years ago, she narrowly lost the general election to Rep. Charlie Crist, who has foregone reelection to run for governor. Moreover, the partisan lean of the 13th went from R+1 to R+12 during redistricting — so whether it’s Luna or Hayslett who wins tonight, either is likely to secure a November win.
- Meanwhile, in today’s Oklahoma run-offs, Trump’s only other nonincumbent endorsee, Rep. Markwayne Mullin, is hoping to fill the seat of Sen. Jim Inhofe, who announced an early retirement that leaves four years of his tenure up for grabs. No candidate received a majority of the vote during Oklahoma’s crowded June 29 primary, so now Mullin will battle it out against former state House Speaker T.W. Shannon. Mullin looks favored to win, having led handily in most polls.
Here’s the full list of the Trump endorsees I’ll be keeping an eye on. (Note that Mullin isn’t listed in the table, as that’s an endorsement Trump made in the runoff versus the primary):
