Where Women Are Competitive In Today’s Primaries
The primaries are winding down, which means we’re getting a clearer picture of whether Democratic and Republican women are keeping pace with the last two election cycles, which both broke records for women’s representation in Congress. So far, the answer is no. Among Democrats, women currently make up 42 percent of House nominees and 31 percent of Senate nominees, which marks a decline from 2020 when women made up 47 percent and 36 percent of nominees, respectively, according to the Center for American Women in Politics. And among Republicans, the share of female House nominees has fallen from 23 percent in 2020 to 19 percent, while the share of female Senate nominees has dropped from 26 percent to 22 percent. Of course, Florida and New York both have a lot of congressional seats to go around, and several races today feature women who could go on to win in November, so those overall numbers could still tick up. In New York’s 19th District, for instance, the EMILY’s List backed candidate, Jamie Cheney, could win, and the FiveThirtyEight forecast currently gives the Democrat in this race a 32 out of 100 chance of winning. However, that Democrat might end up being attorney Josh Riley, who has been endorsed by the progressive group, Indivisible.
Here are all the Democratic women on the ballot I’ll be watching tonight:

Republicans could also add to their totals, especially in Florida’s 13th District, where Trump-endorsed Air Force veteran Anna Paulina Luna has been the front-runner — although recent polls suggest attorney Kevin Hayslett could end up squeeze out Luna in the end. Thanks to redistricting, though, whoever wins this seat is likely to prevail in November. The Republican primary in New York’s 1st District may also nominate a woman, as cryptocurrency trader Michelle Bond has outraised Nick LaLota, the chief of staff of the Suffolk County legislature, even though she jumped in the race long after him. She also has support from VIEW PAC and Winning For Women.
