What We’re Watching In Oklahoma Tonight

Oklahoma may be overshadowed by the huge number of primaries in Florida and New York, but the Sooner State has a couple of key Republican runoffs that will essentially decide the general election outcomes in this deep-red state.

Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe is resigning at the end of the current Congress, and the special election for Senate to succeed him has come down to a race between Rep. Markwayne Mullin and former state House Speaker T.W. Shannon in the GOP runoff. Mullin won 44 percent to Shannon’s 18 percent in the June 28 primary. Mullin has Trump’s endorsement and leads in both the polls and the money race, making him the favorite.

Because Mullin is running for Senate, the heavily Republican 2nd District is also open, and although the runoff is now between state Rep. Avery Frix and former state Sen. Josh Brecheen, the race here is very close. In the June primary, Frix won just 15 percent of the vote to Brecheen’s 14 percent. The runoff has seen millions in outside spending on behalf of both candidates, and the polls show a close race, so there’s quite a bit of uncertainty heading into tonight.
