Rhode Island is basically a one-party state — the Democratic Party — but it can be somewhat conservative. There’s a strong faction of conservative Democrats in the state Legislature, and progressives have been trying to eat into their numbers in recent primaries, with some success in 2020. That trend is continuing tonight, with progressives trying to oust state Senate President Dominick Ruggerio in Senate District 4 and defending two seats in Senate District 6 and Senate District 30. Progressive Jennifer Rourke, who was punched in the face by her prospective Republican opponent, is also facing off against conservative Democrat Michael Carreiro in Senate District 29.
