I am sometimes struck by the parallels between 2004 and 2020. In both cases, there was a Republican incumbent whom many Democrats badly wanted to unseat, and there was a liberal candidate from Vermont seriously contending for the nomination. In 2004, Democratic voters turned to a veteran in John Kerry as their nominee against Bush, and Buttigieg has to hope that it’ll do that again.
