In response to Sarah’s question, my initial instinct is that that’s probably right. Split fields benefit particular candidates. On the other hand, I am sympathetic to Micah’s point that the “lanes” have been slow to emerge among voters, even as elites gravitate to that language and those distinctions (moderate vs. liberal).
