Those early numbers about late deciders have held up as the exit poll sample has gotten bigger and more representative — 63 percent of voters made up their mind this month, while comparable timeframes in previous years had far lower shares. This suggests that primary voters really are surprisingly undecided this year.

When they chose: How 2020 primary voters compare to past years

Breakdown of New Hampshire Democratic primary voters by when they decided who to vote for in 2020 and recent presidential election cycles, according to preliminary exit poll data

When did you decide? 2000 2004 2008 2016 2020
In the past week or so 48% 54% 48% 31% 63%
Earlier than that 52 45 51 68 36

The sample size was 1,730 in 2000, 1,846 in 2004, 2,010 in 2008, 2,222 in 2016 and 2,610 in 2020. Question wording changes slightly from year to year, so the time period asked about is not exactly the same in each election cycle.
