It looks like the Nevada results are gonna be a while, but here’s a little overview of what’s happening in the Republican primary in Nevada’s 2nd District to help make sense of the results when they do come: It’s a pretty solidly Republican district with a partisan lean of R+13. The incumbent, Mark Amodei, has been in office since winning a special election in 2011. These terms are freighted, but I think you could call him a moderate. He is certainly not a partisan warrior.
Anyway, on the last day to file, perennial candidate and son of a prominent basketball coach Danny Tarkanian threw his name into the race. Tarkanian ran and lost in six races for elected office before finally being elected county commissioner in 2020. His pitch to northern Nevadans has been that he is a true conservative, whereas Amodei is not. As these things go, there is little polling, but count this as another test of the appeal of the extremes — and of the old adage that if at first you don’t succeed, try (try, try, try, try) again.
