Using FiveThirtyEight’s partisan lean metric, the new Texas 34th District will be D+17. In 2018, Democrats won two seats that leaned R+17 or more to the right: South Carolina’s 1st District (R+19) and Utah’ 4th District (R+20). (Ignoring some seats that saw court-ordered redistricting and drastically changed, like in Pennsylvania.) So yes, we can’t rule out the new 34th District being in play for Flores, assuming she wins. At the same time, Republicans won 22 of the 24 seats between R+17 and R+20 in 2018, so let’s not get out over our skis here.
