Thinking of what looks like Rice’s potential loss, I’m still struck by what he said during the May 5 debate against his opponents: He called out some of his colleagues in Washington for saying privately that Trump’s actions were out of line on Jan. 6, but who then didn’t vote to impeach Trump. He said he took a principled stand to defend the Constitution, and that Trump’s speech and tweets had incited the crowd. “If they’d gotten hold of Mike Pence, we could have lost our democracy that day,” he told the debate audience.
