What Did — And Didn’t — Go Down In The Iowa Caucuses
The initial count at my location is complete! There are 797 caucusgoers at this precinct — just slightly more than in 2016, when there were 759 caucusgoers. The 797 number will now be used to establish the 15 percent viability thresholds that will be the make-or-break number for each candidate.
While we’re waiting for most results to come in (and I’m waiting for my precinct to start voting), here’s another anecdote from my time in Iowa City that brought home to me just how seriously Iowans take their role in our political process. I met a student at the University of Iowa who has been volunteering for Warren, but has three siblings — all of whom support different campaigns. “My brother is on Biden’s campaign, one sister with Buttigieg, the other sister with Bernie,” he said. It was at that moment that I felt I had reached Peak Iowa.
We do have around around 20 precincts reporting first alignment results, and it’s Buttigieg 21, Sanders 22, Biden 17, Warren 17, Klobuchar 15
