Sondland seems keen on distancing Trump from all of this, which will make the impeachment case harder for Democrats if it can be spun that this was all from Giuliani. But then again, Sondland said multiple times that he thought Giuliani was acting on the president’s orders!

Yes, Clare, it seems totally plausible to me that Trump didn’t draw that connection directly with Sondland because that’s not how he asks for things that could seem shady. And you can see from this testimony why he might do that!
