Sondland won’t say this, but a lot of the reporting suggests he was desperate to have a big job in government after having lots of smaller roles. And his desperation for such a role probably made him an easy mark for Trump.

Striking to hear Sondland introduce himself as a “lifelong Republican.” Other witnesses have emphasized their nonpartisan credentials, but Sondland is a political appointee who’s not shying away from his partisan ties in this opening statement.
