To pull back the curtain a bit, readers, we’re taking extra time right now to figure out what’s going on. Needless to say, we’re watching something stunning and scary unfold right now — exactly how to characterize it, which words to use, etc., is much harder. But the peaceful transfer of power has been a bedrock democratic value in the U.S. for a long time. This is not a peaceful transfer of power. (That doesn’t mean power won’t be transferred, of course.)

Some of the scenes unfolding now at the U.S. Capitol are reminiscent of the protests we’ve seen at the state level about mask mandates — protesters trying to break doors down, screaming about legislators not reflecting the will of the people, etc.
