What Happened This Week In Washington — And Georgia
Our colleagues at ABC News report that “The House went into recess at 2:20 PM.”
Hoyer and Scalise were evacuated by their security details, according to pool reporters in the chamber.
The gallery doors have been locked.
“This is because of you!” Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minnesota, screamed at Republicans.
It’s not entirely clear what’s unfolding with the protesters, but this is a pretty stunning reminder of Trump’s power to incite dramatic and even violent action from his supporters. Maggie Koerth and I wrote last year about how his presidency has emboldened and transformed the modern militia movement, for instance. It’s hard to know exactly what will happen once Trump leaves the White House, but it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll lose that influence with his staunchest supporters once he’s no longer president.
We knew today would be historic, but we’re now getting historic images, not just historic rhetoric.
