What Happened This Week In Washington — And Georgia
I’m keeping one eye on Georgia while the other is trained on what’s going on in Washington. The Associated Press has called the Georgia Public Service Commission race for Republicans; the Democrat in that race was underperforming Warnock and Ossoff, and there just aren’t enough votes left for him to pull ahead. Though not as important as the Senate races, the Georgia Public Service Commission does play an important role in regulating the state’s utilities (deciding when companies can shut off power to consumers, for instance) and Georgia’s move (or lack thereof) toward renewable energy sources.
Retiring Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey just spoke, opposing the objection to certifying Arizona’s results. His retirement before 2022 is potentially pretty costly to Republicans. It’s pretty rare for an incumbent to lose in a swing state in a midterm when his party doesn’t control the presidency. But an open seat is much more of an open question. And the battle for Senate control is likely to be close again in 2022.
