Let’s keep in mind that McConnell still has a pretty nice station in life. He’s still going to be the Senate minority leader. He’s got a 6-3 conservative majority in the Supreme Court. He’s got plenty of money. In some ways, he probably doesn’t mind having Trump out of his hair. He’s got a good chance to win the Senate back in 2022 or 2024. So while he’s bucking Trump, it’s not like he’s necessarily behaving entirely against self-interest here.

Yeah, there is some irony here, Chad. McConnell has played a huge role in creating the conditions he’s now condemning. Of course, we’re now getting some more standard partisan attacks too.

I mean, Chad — Trump just arguably lost McConnell his role as majority leader of the Senate. I have to imagine that motivated at least some of the palpable anger and frustration in this speech.
