What Happened This Week In Washington — And Georgia
McConnell essentially laid out Adam Przeworski’s definition of democracy: “Democracy is a system in which parties lose elections.” If a losing party refuses to accept defeat, democracy can’t function. Ideally, losing parties won’t behave this way because they are willing to wait for the next election, knowing they’ll have another chance to gain power and implement their policies.
McConnell is essentially making a speech arguing that America should be a democratic republic. And that position is dividing his party.
McConnell — an extraordinarily effective partisan — said he is rejecting Trump and allies’ attempts to overturn the results of the election because Americans can’t keep drifting apart into two separate tribes.
