Given this break between McConnell and Trump on democratic values and election fraud, what does this tell us about what McConnell and Trump were really aligned on? They’ve obviously had a productive partnership on the judiciary, but who was using whom in the end?

McConnell essentially laid out Adam Przeworski’s definition of democracy: “Democracy is a system in which parties lose elections.” If a losing party refuses to accept defeat, democracy can’t function. Ideally, losing parties won’t behave this way because they are willing to wait for the next election, knowing they’ll have another chance to gain power and implement their policies.
