What Went Down In The Fifth Democratic Debate
Yes, Nathaniel. Trouble with tried-and-true Democrats is one of the things holding back someone like Sanders, who did very well among independents in the 2016 primary but struggled with people who identified as Democrats.
When I was at the Iowa state fair this summer, there were conservative activists who would follow around the Democratic candidates and ask them provocative questions on camera like, “How many genders do you think there are?” When Gabbard was at the fair they asked her something along the lines of, “When are you going to finally join the good side?” There are people on the right who like her quite a bit and she is obviously an odd fit for the Democratic Party.
This is a bit strange to me though, that Harris would be pursuing this particular avenue. Sanders’s challenge to the party establishment was surprisingly successful in 2016. Obama skated on the edge of being an anti-establishment candidate in 2008. I think the idea of loyalty to the party is a lot more complex than that.
