What Went Down On Night 3 Of The DNC
It’s interesting that the DNC is putting an undocumented immigrant’s story front and center rather than bend over backward to avoid Trump’s charges of being the party that supports “illegal aliens.” They’re clearly betting that most people have empathy for people who crossed the border illegally.
Democrats have really figured out how to take advantage of this new format by featuring more regular people with heartbreaking stories. This is a real shift in conventions, and one I think will be lasting.
Immigration is traditionally a Republican-owned issue (voters trust Republicans to handle the issue more), but the 2018 election showed that Democrats could successfully highlight the issue by focusing on child separation. But so far in 2020, immigration has not been among the top 10 issues mentioned in Democratic House or Senate ads. It is now back to being mentioned more by Republicans.
