What Went Down On Night 3 Of The DNC

Guns and gun control is an example of how American politics doesn’t really respond to public opinion. Most moderate gun control measures are supported by large majorities, yet never seem to move in legislatures.

Support for gun control spikes after mass shootings, but it has been less central to the agenda this year. Like on other issues, people will support more liberal positions when asked about specific policies than gun control generally, gun control opinions tend to move in the opposite direction of the party of the president, becoming more liberal under Trump.

This segment is such a reminder of how American gun violence is. So many of us have family members who’ve died in this very American way, and I’ve got to say, it’s a really resonant segment. Particularly the speech from the mother of a child who was shot in the head and survived, but whose life was so drastically altered.
