Gabrielle Giffords was doing a constituent event outside a Safeway in Tucson when she was shot in the head by a would-be assassin. She miraculously survived but had to resign from Congress; she later founded Americans for Responsible Solutions, a gun control organization now known as simply “Giffords.” Her husband, Mark Kelly, is Democrats’ candidate for U.S. Senate this year in Arizona.

It’s amazing, Geoffrey, how many issues I heard about from voters (a lot of them wanted to hear more about gun violence from the candidates!) that have just gotten totally wiped out by the pandemic. Remember when we were hearing a lot about a wealth tax? Or Trump’s immigration policies?

Segments tonight will focus on very broad policy areas: gun control, climate change, immigration. It’s a very 10,000-foot-view of policy, but it gives you a flavor for the party and the issues it cares about, which is pretty standard convention fare.
