Tad Friend’s profile of Gavin Newsom is … a perfect portrait of how weird politicians are.

Newsom came up in California politics around the same time as Harris. They have been rising stars and allies, and even had the same political strategist. But Newsom also had presidential aspirations — and so Harris being picked as the VP nominee is maybe not great news for him.

Here’s Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jon Meacham, who has never endorsed a presidential candidate before. He told Axios that he felt “this president poses such a clear and present danger to the things we should value most that I think it’s incumbent on all of us who believe that to say something.” But also, y’know, his new book — a biography of Rep. John Lewis — is due out next week, so I’m sure the added spotlight is welcome.
