How Redistricting Has Affected New Mexico’s Congressional Races
New Mexico’s new congressional map is one of the riskiest gerrymanders in the country. The old map contained two fairly secure Democratic seats and one Republican-leaning seat, but Democratic legislators have drawn the new map in the hopes of electing an all-Democratic congressional delegation.
However, this requires making two seats — the 2nd and 3rd districts — highly competitive. In other words, New Mexico could elect a 3-0 Democratic delegation this year — or a 2-1 Republican delegation, an even worse outcome for Democrats than the pre-2022 status quo probably would have produced.
