The Races To Watch In Iowa

Iowa has two races of note today, the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate and the GOP primary in one U.S. House seat:

  • Senate: Seven-term Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley is favored to win reelection, but Democrats have a highly competitive primary between former Rep. Abby Finkenauer and retired Navy Admiral Michael Franken. Finkenauer had seemed like the front-runner, but Franken actually outraised her this calendar year, $2.4 million to $1.8 million. Franken’s internal polling found him running neck and neck with Finkenauer in early May, which could be due to his greater ad spending.
  • 3rd District: Democratic Rep. Cindy Axne faces a tough reelection campaign in this red-leaning swing seat, and a lot might depend on her Republican opponent. Two Republicans battling to take on Axne are state Sen. Zach Nunn, who’s promoted his conservative accomplishments in the state legislature, and financial planner Nicole Hasso, who’s played up her outsider credentials and religious faith.
