Kansas Upheld Abortion Rights And Other Key Updates From The Aug. 2 Elections
Filed under 2022 Election
Totally, Amelia, but what’s so interesting in Kansas was that the vote wasn’t to ban or not ban abortion, per se. Instead, it was focused on whether the state legislature had the right to impose restrictions, or whether it was safeguarded by the state constitution and, therefore, not subject to legislative restrictions. Voters clearly seem to have decided that, nope, the state legislature doesn’t have the right to impose restrictions, but part of me is intrigued by how much this was shaped by the total bans on abortion. That as you said, is really unpopular with voters. I wouldn’t be so bold to predict we’ll see a shift in the strategy from anti-abortion groups, but if they lose more votes like this … maybe we will.
