What We’re Watching In Kansas Tonight
The two biggest races in Kansas this fall will be for governor and the state’s 3rd Congressional District, but neither one is sporting very competitive primaries today. (Governor will be Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly vs. Republican Attorney General Derek Schmidt; the 3rd District is expected to pit Democratic Rep. Sharice Davids against former Kansas Republican Party Chair Amanda Adkins.)
Instead, the main primary to watch is the GOP race for attorney general, where far-right former Secretary of State Kris Kobach — known for his past scandals and failed pursuit of voter fraud — is seeking a political comeback. However, state Sen. Kellie Warren has raised more money than Kobach and attacked him for being unelectable. That said, a third candidate, former prosecutor Tony Mattivi, could also draw some anti-Kobach votes.
Of course, we’re also watching a big ballot measure in Kansas tonight: the Value Them Both constitutional amendment that could pave the way for the Kansas General Assembly to ban abortion in the state. Amelia will have more on that race in a minute.
