What Went Down In The June 21 Elections In Alabama, Virginia And Georgia

As polls close in Georgia, here’s a quick recap of what I’m watching in the state’s 2nd District. While the Democratic primary was settled in May, a runoff is taking place tonight between Republicans Chris West and Jeremy Hunt. In May, Hunt secured 37 percent of the vote compared to West, who netted 30 percent, and national Republicans have seemingly rallied around Hunt ahead of tonight. In Hunt, Republicans have a Black veteran who could both increase the diversity of the GOP caucus and potentially appeal to the district’s Black voters. But West isn’t going down without a fight. In debates, he casted Hunt as an outsider to the district and previously chided his opponent for flooding the race with “special interest donors.” This race will likely be one of Georgia’s most closely watched congressional races come November since redistricting made the district more competitive for both parties. The winner of tonight’s race will face Democratic incumbent Rep. Sanford Bishop in November.
