Some non-Alabama/Virginia/Georgia news for all our ~Texans~ following along: Earlier tonight, the Associated Press officially called Texas’s 28th District for Rep. Henry Cuellar. If you’ll recall, Cuellar declared victory in a nail-biter runoff election against progressive upstart Jessica Cisneros back in May, but Cisneros — who was separated from Cuellar by roughly 200 votes at the time — refused to concede and requested a recount. Those recount results were released earlier today, though, and officially gave Cuellar a 289-vote edge over Cisneros. Cuellar, who has been in office since 2005, is one of the most conservative Democrats in the House. Still, despite his anti-abortion and support for Trump-endorsed policies, the incumbent still had the backing of the congressional Democratic establishment going into May’s race. He also touted his ability to work across the aisle, which may have had a bigger appeal to South Texas voters — particularly Latinos who are receptive to conservative messaging already. Cuellar will face Republican Cassy Garcia in a district that skews Democratic but should still be fairly competitive this fall.
