What We’re Watching In Virginia Tonight

There are two Republican primaries we’re paying particular attention to in Virginia tonight:

  • In the 2nd District, national Republicans are all in on Navy veteran and state Sen. Jen Kiggans, who looks like a strong recruit for this seat with a large, local Navy presence. Internal polling has given her a big lead, but internal polls can also often mislead, so keep an eye on fellow Navy veteran Jarome Bell too. Bell’s far-right views may help him in the GOP primary, although his winning would likely make it easier for Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria to hold this seat in the fall.
  • By contrast, the Republican primary in the 7th District looks wide open. Four candidates have raised at least $500,000: state Sen. Bryce Reeves, Prince William County Supervisor Yesli Vega, former Green Beret Derrick Anderson and Stafford County Board of Supervisors Chair Crystal Vanuch. Either Vega or Vanuch would add another woman to the GOP’s male-heavy caucus, and Vega would be the first Hispanic member of Congress from Virginia.
